How Long Do Canned Goods Last?

Unopened canned goods last years in a cool, dry pantry if the can is intact. After opening, transfer to a sealed container and refrigerate — most opened canned foods last 3–4 days.

Quick decision rule

  • If the unopened can is intact, treat the printed date mainly as a quality marker and inspect the can before opening.
  • If the can is bulging, leaking, rusted through, or deeply dented on a seam, discard it before tasting.
  • Once opened, use the linked food page when it lists a more specific opened or refrigerated window.

Unopened cans

  • Store below 85°F; avoid damp basements that rust cans.
  • Discard bulging, leaking, or deeply dented cans — botulism risk.
  • “Best by” dates are quality, not safety, for most canned goods.

After opening

Never store food in the open can — metallic taste and quality loss. Transfer to glass or plastic, refrigerate, and use within 3–4 days unless the food page says otherwise.
