Food storage questions

10 short answers with the verdict first. Each one links to the exact food page, guide, or tool that carries the cited duration and safety context.

How long can chicken sit out before it goes bad?
Raw or cooked chicken should not sit at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour above 90°F / 32°C). After that, discard it. See our chicken left-out guide and raw chicken storage times for details.
How long is milk good after the sell-by date?
Sell-by is a store display date, not a safety deadline. Whole milk kept at 40°F or below is typically good for about 5–7 days after opening and several days past sell-by if it smells and looks normal. See milk storage times.
Is leftover rice safe to eat the next day?
Yes, if refrigerated within 2 hours of cooking and reheated to 165°F (74°C). Cooked rice left out overnight should be discarded — Bacillus cereus can survive reheating. See leftover rice storage times.
Can you eat eggs after the expiration date?
Raw eggs in the shell are often fine 3–5 weeks after purchase when kept refrigerated at 40°F or below. Crack into a bowl first — discard if the white is runny or the yolk flat, or if you smell sulfur. See egg storage times.
Is pizza safe if left out overnight?
No. Perishable toppings (meat, cheese) follow the 2-hour rule. Pizza left on the counter overnight should be discarded. Refrigerated leftover pizza lasts about 3–4 days. See leftover pizza storage times.
Is freezer-burned food safe to eat?
Yes — freezer burn affects quality and texture, not safety, as long as food stayed at 0°F (−18°C) or below. Trim dry areas before cooking. See our freezer burn guide.
Can you thaw meat on the counter?
No. USDA recommends thawing in the refrigerator, in cold water (changed every 30 minutes), or in the microwave — never on the counter. See safe thawing in our glossary.
What temperature should my fridge be?
Keep your refrigerator at 40°F (4°C) or below and your freezer at 0°F (−18°C). Use a fridge thermometer in the warmest zone (usually the door). See our fridge temperature zones guide.
How long is food safe in the fridge during a power outage?
A full freezer holds safe temperature about 48 hours; a half-full freezer about 24 hours. A closed fridge stays cold about 4 hours. Do not open the door unnecessarily. See our power outage fridge guide.
Should you refrigerate tomatoes?
Store ripe tomatoes at room temperature for best flavor and texture. Refrigeration makes them mealy. Once cut, refrigerate and use within a few days. See foods you should not refrigerate.
