Lunchbox & Packed Lunch Food Safety

Packed lunches without a cold source can enter the danger zone before noon. Use an insulated bag + ice pack for meat, dairy, cut fruit, and mayo-based salads.

Pack with a cold source

  • Freeze juice boxes or water bottles as ice packs.
  • Keep the lunch bag out of direct sun and car trunks.
  • Discard perishables that returned warm at the end of the day.

Shelf-stable vs perishable

  • Shelf-stable: whole fruit, unopened crackers, peanut butter sandwiches (no mayo).
  • Perishable: deli meat, yogurt, cut fruit, egg salad.
